This book is a systematic compilation of the most recent body of knowledge in the rapidly developing research area of greenhouse gas interaction with clay systems. Unexpected results of the most recent studies – such as unusually high sorption capacity and sorption hysteresis of swelling clays –stimulated theoretical activity in this fascinating field. Classical molecular dynamics (MD) explains swelling caused by intercalation of water molecules and to a certain degree of CO2 molecules in clay interlayer. However, unusual frequency shifts in the transient infrared fingerprints of the intercalated molecules and the following accelerated carbonation can be tackled only via quantum mechanical modeling. This book provides a streamlined (from simple to complex) guide to the most advanced research efforts in this field.

More Details..

This book presents currently available renewable energy technologies (RETs) and explores their possible integration into the economically viable and green residential microgrids of tomorrow. The emphasis is on the importance of RETs in today’s energy-efficient building designs, and on those RET mathematical models suitable for both performance simulation and economic appraisal. A range of energy storage alternatives, as well as typical energy consumption patterns, are also thoroughly described and precisely simulated. After selecting the right components for a hybrid system, readers are introduced to problems of system integration and optimization, using simulations that support alternative scenario exercises and comparative analysis. The multicriteria comparison also includes detailed investment appraisals, using both conventional methodologies and the authors’ novel green-accounting-based appraisal to investigate the impacts on the economic efficiency of the project.

More Details..

The Apollo Spacecraft: Evolution, Engineering, and Flight Operations' is the definitive description of the spacecraft and the technologies used for the journey to the Moon. The spacecraft that eventually landed on the Moon did not spring fully formed because of Kennedy's May 1961 challenge. 'The Apollo Spacecraft' begins by tracing its origins from 1959 when contract bids were already being prepared for a lunar spacecraft. Caught unprepared for a full lunar landing mission, von Braun and other NASA engineers recognized that the spacecraft already under development could never be reconciled with the mission architectures under consideration. Changing the mission architecture and introducing a new spacecraft, the Lunar Module, threw the development of the Apollo CSM into a lurch by requiring significant modifications to the vehicle. The resulting spacecraft, while pushing the limits of the possible, became a complex set of compromises. By tracking the spacecraft's development with its numerous fits and false starts, 'Apollo Spacecrafts' describes how the final mission design and flight operations reflected these early engineering decisions.

More Details..

This book teaches practitioners and students how to gather, clean, and manage financial data in R for data analysis of SQL and MongoDB databases. Data wrangling is a pain management program for financial data analysts. Data analysts spend 90 percent of their work time wrangling (munging) data into a usable format. A corollary of this rule of thumb is that the tasks of gathering, cleaning, massaging, and managing data account for 80 percent of the costs of data warehousing projects. With the volume and complexity of financial data increasing exponentially, nothing is more crippling to efficient data analysis than inefficient data wrangling.

Yet practical instruction for data analysts in how to deal with the data management headaches that fill up a majority of their working hours is scattered and disorganized. Nor is it specifically taught in programming courses, where the focus is on the language and not data management. Most students learn the programming language R, but they do not learn the concomitant data management skills that are essential to data analysis: in particular, how to read and write data from and between structured database technologies—notably SQL—and unstructured DBs—notably MongoDB . As a result, graduates are left ill-prepared for jobs in the real world, where financial companies seek analysts whose skill sets encompass data management in tandem with data analysis.

Data Wrangling teaches practitioners and students of financial data analysis the SQL and MongoDB database management skills they need to succeed in their analytic work. The authors, who have deep experience in the financial industry as well as in teaching quantitative finance, take most of the operational and programming examples that enrich their book from the financial arena, including both market data and text-based data. The concepts presented through these examples are nonetheless applicable to a wide range of fields, so data analysts from all industries will profit from this book.

The study of regionalism is essential as it has become a vital trend with profound regional and global impacts. Japan, Korea and China are regarded as the key actors for such action in East Asia. While regionalization has created building blocks for economic integration, the act of exclusion from regionalism will only lead to marginalization. Therefore, it is important to learn how to make it work.

This book analyzes the effect of China, Japan and Korea's trade strategy on ASEAN countries. As closer economic ties between countries in the area have expanded significantly in the last decade, economic regionalization in East Asia has proceeded in a much more dynamic fashion than regionalist projects. Hastiadi argues that regionalism in the form of Regional Trade Agreements (RTAs) is better than the present regionalization as it promotes sustainability in the future.

More Details..

This book provides a unique multi- and interdisciplinary approach to energy conversion technologies by shedding light on the topic from both technological and ethical perspectives. It applies these concepts to examples of engineering problems related to energy conversion – an internal combustion engine and a fuel cell – in order to give the reader a clear idea of how to implement the approaches and do the work. The first part is an introduction to thermodynamics, which is an important concept for engineers when describing and analyzing energy conversion processes in terms of their efficiency. The book goes on to discuss the concepts of energy analysis and life cycle assessment while taking environmental aspects into account, particularly the formation of pollutants. The second part introduces the ethical terminology and describes global and environmental risks associated with energy conversion, as well as aspects of sustainability. The book is based on an introductory lecture on energy technologies for undergraduate engineering students. However, the explanation of the various concepts remains illustrative, avoiding a more complex mathematical or philosophical treatment of the subject. Therefore, this book provides a modern but timeless introduction to energy conversion technologies that is well suited for the generally interested reader.

More Details..

This book describes how the genome sequence contributes to our understanding of allopolyploidisation and the genome evolution, genetic diversity, complex trait regulation and knowledge-based breeding of this important crop. Numerous examples demonstrate how widespread homoeologous genome rearrangements and exchanges have moulded structural genome diversity following a severe polyploidy bottleneck. The allopolyploid crop species Brassica napus has the most highly duplicated plant genome to be assembled to date, with the largest number of annotated genes.

Examples are provided for use of the genome sequence to identify and capture diversity for important agronomic traits, including seed quality and disease resistance. The increased potential for detailed gene discovery using high-density genetic mapping, quantitative genetics and transcriptomic analyses is described in the context of genome availability and illustrated with recent examples. Intimate knowledge of the highly-duplicated gene space, on the one hand, and the repeat landscape on the other, particularly in comparison to the two diploid progenitor genomes, provide a fundamental basis for new insights into the regulatory mechanisms that are coupled with selection for polyploid success and crop evolution.

Spare Rib remains one of the most iconic symbols of Second Wave Feminism, its influence far out-living the span of its publication (1972-1993).  This collection examines various aspects of the magazine - based on the digitised publication by the British Library in 2015 – in order to explore the ways in which it has influenced society in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, as well as the lives of individual readers. By analysing several articles from a modern, post-feminist perspective, and using cross-generational interviews of Spare Rib readers and reflective accounts of reading the publication, the significance and endurance of the publication is demonstrated. Written by both academics, experienced researchers and independent scholars alike, the inter-disciplinary nature of the text results in a multi-dimensional reading of Spare Rib suitable for both an academic and general readership interested in cultural and media studies.

This edited collection speaks to and expands on existing debates around incarceration. Rather than focusing on the bricks and mortar of institutional spaces, this volume’s inventive engagements in ‘thinking through carcerality’ touch on more elusive concepts of identity, memory and internal – as well as physical – walls and bars. Edited by two human geographers, and positioned within a criminological context, this original collection draws together essays by geographers and criminologists with a keen interest in carceral studies. The authors stretch their disciplinary boundaries; tackling a range of contemporary literatures to engage in new conversations and raising important questions within current debates on incarceration. A highly interdisciplinary project, this edited collection will be of particular interest to scholars of the criminal justice system, social policy, and spatial carceral studies.
