More Details..

Shakespeare's English: A Practical Linguistic Guide provides students with a solid grounding for understanding the language of Shakespeare and its place within the development of English. With a prime focus on Shakespeare and his works, Keith Johnson covers all aspects of his language (vocabulary, grammar, sounds, rhetorical structure etc.), and gives illuminating background information on the linguistic context of the Elizabethan Age. As well as providing a unique introduction to the subject, Johnson encourages a "hands-on" approach, guiding students, through the use of activities, towards an understanding of how Shakespeare's English works.

This book offers:

· A unique approach to the study of Early Modern English which enables students to engage independently with the topic

· Clear and engagingly written explanations of linguistic concepts

· Plentiful examples and activities, including suggestions for further work

· A glossary, further reading suggestions and guidance to relevant websites

Shakespeare's English is perfect for undergraduate students following courses that combine English language, linguistics and literature, or anyone with an interest in knowing more about the language with which Shakespeare worked his literary magic.

Words: A User's Guide is an accessible and invaluable reference that is ideal for students, business people and advanced learners of English. The book is structured in groups of words that may be confused because they sound alike, look alike or seem to have similar meanings, and this approach makes it much more intuitive and easy to use than a dictionary.

Contrasting over 5000 words (such as habitable and inhabitable, precipitation and rainfall, reigns and reins), Words: a User’s Guide provides examples of usage adapted from large national databases of contemporary English, and illustrates each headword in typical contexts and phrases.

This book gives you straightforward answers, and helps with pronunciation, spelling, style and levels of formality. For those working internationally it presents international standards and compares usage in Britain and the USA. Words: A User’s Guide is an excellent resource for anyone who wants to communicate well in written and spoken English.

"At last! A book about the use of words that clarifies and de-mystifies in an eminently usable way.  I would recommend it to anyone who wants to write well. It is a book to keep."

Sandy Gilkes, Head of the Centre for Academic Practice, University of Northampton

"Rigorous, fresh, intriguing and downright useful, it deserves a place on every properly stocked reference shelf."

Brian Cathcart, Professor of Journalism, Kingston University

"From the pedantic to the permissive, everyone who’s interested in the English language and the way we speak and write it will want a copy of this practical, entertaining book."

More Details..

This reader and rhetoric takes a new approach to teaching writing across the curriculum in that it provides descriptions and published examples of genres used in seventeen academic disciplines, as well as opinion essays that typical freshman textbooks contain. The opinion pieces from newspapers and magazines have been chosen to stimulate student interest and discussion, leading students to do further research in those areas. The examples of actual scholarly writing, while also intended to spark interest and further research, have been chosen to demonstrate the different genres used by writers in the various disciplines. The opinion pieces and the scholarly articles are related to each other by the themes that run through this book, for example, romantic love, clothing styles, body images, and feuds. Accompanying these selections are questions for class discussion, prompts for further research, brief descriptions of the various disciplines and their research methods, descriptions of different documentation styles, and information on integrating material from across the disciplines. The user-friendly rhetoric helps students choose topics for writing, carry out research on their topic, plan their papers, and produce and revise drafts.

Outside the Box is a reader that introduces students to significant ideas that have shaped our way of looking at the world and to the way those ideas were shaped through argumentation, skills writers learn to use in their own writing. Each chapter illustrates the birth and development of an important idea through classic essays, then focuses on contemporary challenges to the concept from academics, experts, popular culture, and the general public. For example, Chapter Eight introduce the idea of the unconscious through essays from the founders of psychology, Freud and Jung, along with subsequent developments and critiques of their ideas by contemporary psychologists, then focuses on the current debate about how to treat depression. The final chapters explore how science and technology might shape our future, then turn to an examinations of how concepts in the book have been applied in popular culture, specifically Star Trek and The X-Files. Outside the Box offers a wide variety of readings that serve as models for student writing, texts for analytical class discussion, and prompts for in-class or journal writings.Students become a part of the production of knowledge, not visitors to a museum of great ideas.

Designed for area studies students studying French, it presents the historical context necessary for language students to understand the complexities of contemporary French society. Adopting a chronological approach, it surveys nearly two hundred years of French history, with events covered including The French Revolution, The Bourbon Restoration, The Third Republic, Occupied France, The Fourth Republic, The Gaullist Revolution and France after 2003.

This revised edition includes new material that focuses on Chirac\'s second mandate (Iraq war, religion, suburbs and the inability/impossibility of carrying on with reform), an assessment of the controversial Sarkozy presidency, and a final chapter covering the last ten years, culminating in the results of the French presidential elections in 2012.

Features include:

  • clear timelines of main events and suggested topics for discussion
  • glossary inserts throughout of key terms and concepts
  • the use of primary documents to re-create and understand the past
  • free access to a website (http://www.port.ac.uk/special/france1815to2003/) containing a wealth of complementary material

More Details..

Understanding Sociolinguistics provides you with a step-by-step introduction to the analytical framework and methodology of this core element of Linguistics courses.

Understanding Sociolinguistics gives you a comprehensive overview of the key linguistic traditions of the past and shows you how sociolinguistics, as pioneered by Labov in the 1960s, diverged from these. It clearly explains recent sociolinguistic developments and their impact on other linguistic domains, such as the study of language change and dialect contact. Sociolinguistic methodologies are illustrated throughout using examples from studies worldwide and citing the major works in this field.

In addition, factors of linguistic variability, such as class, style and age, are examined in detail and there is a chapter focusing on gender in which the findings and interpretations of gender differentiation in language are presented. The contribution of sociolinguistics to language change is examined with reference to socio-historical linguistics via the works of major scholars. Dialect geography and the formation of new dialects are also covered, taking examples from languages around the world.

Each chapter includes revision exercises and further reading lists so you can test your understanding and aid your own research.

'Every student of English should get a copy of this grammar.' Aberdeen Press and Journal 'All readers will find in the work a masterly exposition of the combination of life and logic in the grammar of a living tongue.' - Schoolmaster 'A mine of suggestion.' - John O'London's Weekly 'Far more logical and far more elastic than the traditional methods...He writes with the ease of perfect mastery.' - Teacher's World This classic text presents the chief facts of English grammar, giving a real insight into the structure of the language in the light of modern linguistic science. Grammatical rules are laid out in clear, concise terms and carefully selected examples illustrate the rules. Much stress is laid on word order and other important things which are generally neglected in works of this kind; forms and their uses are treated together, and an endeavour is made throughout to get away from the trammels of Latin Grammar. Historical explanations are kept in the background except in the chapters on the evolution of the sound system, where they are necessary to understand the difference between breath and breathe, the sounds of food, good and blood, etc.

More Details..

Motivation is a vital element in learning, and the most commonly cited explanation for success or failure in language learning. Jill Hadfield and Zoltán Dörnyei present a new theory of motivation centred around the notion of the "˜Ideal Future Language Self", arguing that if students have a rich and inspiring vision of themselves as successful future language learners and users, they will be motivated to work hard to actualise the vision and become that learner. This book:

  • integrates the latest research in language teaching with innovative classroom practice
  • offers suggestions on how the various components of the theory could be structured into a teaching sequence
  • includes a variety of imaginative classroom activities designed to aid both student and teacher in creating and actualising the Ideal Self through visualisation, goal setting, task identification and planning, and a selection of appropriate learning strategies
  • shows how teachers can undertake motivation-related research in their own classrooms

This is an ideal guide to and activity book for the theory and practice of motivation in language learning for students and teachers alike.

More Details..

The reappearance of alliterative verse in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries remains one of the most puzzling issues in the literary history of medieval England. In From Lawmen to Plowmen, Stephen M. Yeager offers a fresh, insightful explanation for the alliterative structure of William Langland’s Piers Plowman and the flourishing of alliterative verse satires in late medieval England by observing the similarities between these satires and the legal-homiletical literature of the Anglo-Saxon era.

Unlike Old English alliterative poetry, Anglo-Saxon legal texts and documents continued to be studied long after the Norman Conquest. By comparing Anglo-Saxon charters, sermons, and law codes with Langland’s Piers Plowman and similar poems, Yeager demonstrates that this legal and homiletical literature had an influential afterlife in the fourteenth-century poetry of William Langland and his imitators. His conclusions establish a new genealogy for medieval England’s vernacular literary tradition and offer a new way of approaching one of Middle English’s literary classics.

More Details..

Testifying to the maturity of the youth literacy education field, this collection of papers displays the increasing sophistication of research on the subject, and at the same time offers pointers to its potential for development in the next decade. The contributors track the rapid proliferation of youth literacies in today’s digital age, from video games to social media and film production. Drawing on detailed research and an intimate knowledge of youth communities in nations as diverse as Canada and Uganda, they provide notable examples of digital literacies in situ, and challenge conventional wisdom about literacy education.

The chapters do more, however, than merely offer reportage of a crisis in literacy education. The authors embrace the core challenge faced by educators everywhere: how to incorporate and utilize new modes of literacy in education, and how to realize the potential benefits of heterogeneous modern media in youth literacy education, especially in marginalized, remote, and disadvantaged communities. This volume expands our view of digital communications technologies and digital literacies to include complex understandings of how media such as translated videos can serve as learning tools for youths whose access to literacy education is limited. In particular, a number of contributing scholars provide important new information about the praxis of teachers and the literacies adopted by young people in Africa, a continent largely neglected by literacy researchers. This book’s global perspective, and its ground-level viewpoint of youth literacy practices in a variety of locations, problematizes normative assumptions about researching literacy as well as about literacy itself.

This book examines language and identity among White American middle and upper-middle class youth who affiliate with Hip-Hop culture. Hip-Hop youth engage in practices that range from thec onsumption of rap music and fashion to practices like MC-ing (writing and performing raps or "rhymes"), DJ-ing (mixing records to produce a beat for the MC), graffiti tagging, and break-dancing. Cutler explores the way in which these young people stylize their speech using linguistic resources drawn from African American English and Hip-Hop slang terms. She also looks at the way they construct their identities in discussions with their friends, and how they talk about and use language to construct themselves as authentic within Hip-Hop. Cutler considers the possibility that young people experimenting with AAVE-styled speech may improve the status of AAVE in the broader society. She also addresses the need for educators to be aware of the linguistic patterns found in AAVE and Hip-Hop language, and ways to build on Hip-Hop skills like rhyming and rapping in order to motivate students and promote literacy.
