Including a new chapter on credit risk modelling and new developments in econometrics, the new edition of this bestselling resource provides an accessible overview of financials models based on jump processes used in risk management and option pricing. After presenting the necessary mathematics, the text presents theoretical, numerical, and empirical issues. While the emphasis is on demystifying technical difficulties so as to better understand applications, mathematical results are presented in a rigorous, though self-contained, manner, accessible to any reader having basic knowledge of the Black Scholes model. Concepts are illustrated through many numerical and empirical examples.

More Details..

The quantum nuclear many-body problem lies at the heart of low-energy nuclear physics and represents a fundamental challenge to our understanding of the universe. This book presents various many-body techniques used to describe nuclei from the basic interactions among nucleons. It provides a brief description of modern nuclear forces and their application in finite nuclei. It also includes an overview of several many-body techniques used in the field, including quantum Monte Carlo, configuration interaction, and coupled cluster methods. The book covers the key algorithms necessary to build out and/or use computer codes for simple problems. It also focuses on important high-performance computing aspects, modern computing languages, parallelization methods and libraries, and basic quantum many-body training.

More Details..

The authors of this book have been involved in a UK DTI funded project for 6 years, with the aim of developing a model for reliability growth during system design and development. Working with engineers across major aerospace companies including BAE Systems and Rolls Royce, they have translated modeling theory into practice with an integrated methodology based on a stochastic model. This methodology discusses modeling features including failure process, dependencies, data classification taxonomies, qualitative structuring and quantitative instantiation, and parametric/ non-parametric bootstrapping. Though founded on research conducted in the aerospace sector, the methodology is relevant to all applications of systems engineering in industries such as automotive, process, marine and telecommunications, and is based on a strong understanding of the needs of engineers. In-depth case studies presented in the book elucidate the theory in practice; chapters include modeling processes grounded in decisions and data, formulating the stochastic model, data structures, elicitation of subjective judgment, parameter estimation and updating, decision support and verification and validation. This book translates theory into practice, with a focus on the understanding of practical engineering needs. It discusses practical modeling strategies as well as simply describing techniques. It considers the modeling of reliability growth as an integral part of the systems engineering design process, in both closed control systems and waterfall design processes. It develops methods for preparing and collecting data, including hard failure experience and the elicitation of soft engineering judgment. It presents the formulation of the model under both classical and Bayesian philosophies.

More Details..

How can one visualize a curve that fills the entire plane or all of space? Can a polyhedron be smoothly turned inside out? What is the projective plane? What does four-dimensional space look like? Can soap bubbles exist that are not spherical? How can one better understand the structure of vortices and currents? In this book you will experience mathematics from the visual point of view, discovering fascinating and never previously published images that offer illustrative examples to the above questions. Every picture is accompanied by a brief explanatory text, references to further reading, and a number of web links where you can obtain further information. This book is intended for all friends of mathematics—students, teachers, amateurs, and professionals—who want to see something beyond dry text and endless formulas. It will provide inspiration for pursuing further one or another topic that may previously have seemed inaccessible. You will get to know mathematics from a totally new and colorful viewpoint.

Non-life insurance pricing is the art of setting the price of an insurance policy, taking into consideration varoius properties of the insured object and the policy holder. Introduced by British actuaries generalized linear models (GLMs) have become today a the standard aproach for tariff analysis.

The book focuses on methods based on GLMs that have been found useful in actuarial practice and provides a set of tools for a tariff analysis. Basic theory of GLMs in a tariff analysis setting is presented with useful extensions of standarde GLM theory that are not in common use.

The book meets the European Core Syllabus for actuarial education and is written for actuarial students as well as practicing actuaries. To support reader real data of some complexity are provided at www.math.su.se/GLMbook.

More Details..

Rooted in a pedagogically successful problem-solving approach to linear algebra, the present work fills a gap in the literature that is sharply divided between elementary texts and books that are too advanced to appeal to a wide audience. It clearly develops the theoretical foundations of vector spaces, linear equations, matrix algebra, eigenvectors, and orthogonality, while simultaneously emphasizing applications and connections to fields such as biology, economics, computer graphics, electrical engineering, cryptography, and political science.

Ideal as an introduction to linear algebra, the extensive exercises and well-chosen applications also make this text suitable for advanced courses at the junior or senior undergraduate level. Furthermore, it can serve as a colorful supplementary problem book, reference, or self-study manual for professional scientists and mathematicians. Complete with bibliography and index, "Essential Linear Algebra with Applications" is a natural bridge between pure and applied mathematics and the natural and social sciences, appropriate for any student or researcher who needs a strong footing in the theory, problem-solving, and model-building that are the subject’s hallmark.

More Details..

Parallel Computing for Data Science: With Examples in R, C++ and CUDA is one of the first parallel computing books to concentrate exclusively on parallel data structures, algorithms, software tools, and applications in data science. It includes examples not only from the classic "n observations, p variables" matrix format but also from time series, network graph models, and numerous other structures common in data science. The examples illustrate the range of issues encountered in parallel programming.

With the main focus on computation, the book shows how to compute on three types of platforms: multicore systems, clusters, and graphics processing units (GPUs). It also discusses software packages that span more than one type of hardware and can be used from more than one type of programming language. Readers will find that the foundation established in this book will generalize well to other languages, such as Python and Julia.
