This book examines the recent expansion of Ireland's literary tradition to include home-grown crime fiction. It surveys the wave of books that use genre structures to explore specifically Irish issues such as the Troubles and the rise and fall of the Celtic Tiger, as well as Irish experiences of human trafficking, the supernatural, abortion, and civic corruption. These novels are as likely to address the national regulation of sexuality through institutions like the Magdalen Laundries as they are to follow serial killers through the American South or to trace international corporate conspiracies.

This study includes chapters on Northern Irish crime fiction, novels set in the Republic, women protagonists, and transnational themes, and discusses Irish authors’ adaptations of a well-loved genre and their effect on assumptions about the nature of Irish literature. It is a book for readers of crime fiction and Irish literature alike, illuminating the fertile intersections of the two.

More Details..

An unnamed author waits in a bar in Tel Aviv on a stifling hot night. He is there to give a reading of his work but as he sits, bored, he begins to conjure up the life stories of the people he meets, not least Ricky, an equally bored but seductive waitress. Later, when the reading is underway, he weaves stories around the audience and panel before asking the professional reader for a drink. She declines and the Author walks away, only to climb the steps to her flat later that night. Or does he? In Amos Oz's beguiling, intriguing story the reader hardly knows where reality ends and invention begins...

More Details..

"Their journey in Milenia had been long and heart-breaking... But how tattered the state of the human heart was. Hey; those appearances. Absurd: White blackness, health sickness, heaven hell... They brayed about a bright future at death point, they wedded on deathbeds…," says the narrator towards the end of The Blissabyss. In The Blissabyss, Andrew Nyongesa attests to the tenet of Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis that primordial instincts of sex and destruction dominate human nature. It is therefore fallacious for the hero, Eugene Simiyu, to imagine that he is above these base natures. Even in the best of his times, Eugene exhibits sex instincts in thought; perhaps it is only the Creator with the power to be perfect. The novelist warns the audience to beware as they mock others as the young Eugene does. Life has countless enemies of propriety and virtue; and the first is the evil nature within us then that without. Eugene confronts lust from within and jealousy from without. Eugene has the attributes of a tragic hero; he is gifted but his pride leads to his downfall. He learns that he is no better than Nancie and Wambaka; he is an absurd combination: heavenhell and goodbad.
