More Details..

The mining sector is a major issue for most Asian governments as well as a controversial one, drawing criticism from indigenous groups, non-governmental organizations and politically-motivated elites. In addition, corruption and a lack of institutional capacity frequently plagues the sector. Despite significant resource wealth and positive regulatory reform over the past decade, investors have continued to treat the region with caution. Poor performance of the governance structures and non-performing regulatory regimes in the mining sector is behind the high level of risk for foreign mining investors and the low levels of foreign direct investment (FDI) in many of these countries. The objective of this book is to identify key drivers for poor regulatory performance in six mineral-rich Asian countries (Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and the Philippines) and suggest particular causes of action to improve regulatory architecture in the region.

More Details..

This book draws on Daoist yin/yang dialectics to move world politics from the current stasis of hegemony, hierarchy, and violence to a more balanced engagement with parity, fluidity, and ethics.

The author theorizes that we may develop a richer, more representative approach towards sustainable and democratic governance by offering a non-Western alternative to hegemonic debates in IR. The book presents the story of world politics by integrating folk tales and popular culture with policy analysis. It does not exclude current models of liberal internationalism but rather brackets them for another day, another purpose. The deconstruction of IR as a singular unifying school of thought through the lens of a non-Westphalian analytic shows a unique perspective on the forces that drive and shape world politics. This book suggests new ways to articulate and act so that global politics is more inclusive and less coercive. Only then, the book claims, could IR realize what the dao has always stood for: a world of compassion and care.

The Dao of World Politics bridges the humanities and social sciences, and will be of interest to scholars and students of the global/international, as well as policymakers and activists of the local/domestic.

More Details..

Despite playing a pivotal role in the liberalization and globalization of finance since the late 1950s, and being the principal center for bank supervision, the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) is perhaps the most obscure and under-researched of the major global financial institutions.

This book offers readers the only available definitive guide to understanding the BIS’s identity and institutional make-up, as well as its role in the global financial system. It examines the internal governance and policy outputs of the BIS and provides a critical analysis of its evolution as the principal international center for central bank cooperation and the establishment international rules and standards for supervising internationally active banks. The BIS is often depicted as playing a supportive role to the IMF, G-8, World Bank, OECD, and regional development banks in the management of global finance.

Ozgercin illuminates the role of the BIS in the existing architecture of global financial institutions, thus highlighting significant institutional differences. The proposed book will illustrate that compared to the other major global financial institutions, which are linked directly to governments through their treasuries, the BIS constitutes a uniquely independent, market-led approach to global financial governance, emphasizing the self-regulation of market institutions.

A comprehensive yet concise and accessible introduction to the BIS, it will be of interest to students from a wide range of disciplines including Politics and International Studies, History, Sociology, Economics, and Finance.

More Details..

The Legitimacy of Global Health Governance examines organisations which deal with global health governance, differing from intergovernmental organisations such as the WHO. It looks at the new governance forms these organisations represent, showing that they have unprecedented characteristics in terms of their organisational features and their approach to achieving outcomes.

How is the legitimacy of these organisations validated if they do not use existing intergovernmental models? In order to address this key question, the book traces the evolution of governance in the global health arena, and explains the role of stakeholders in the legitimization process. It analyses stakeholders’ priorities in terms of what constitutes good, appropriate and ‘legitimate’ governance, and how they view organisations with respect to these priorities.

Three case studies of organisations dealing with HIV / AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, provide a detailed mapping of the activities and structures of global health governance organisations. The Legitimacy of Global Health Governance will be of interest to students and scholars of global health issues and politics, and globalization.

More Details..

This book studies the debates surrounding the grand strategy of the United States following the Cold War. It assesses the strategic ideas that have been advanced to conceptualise American foreign policy, grouping these thematically under the headings of primacy, neo-isolationism and liberal multilateralism. The conceptual framework is within the neoclassical realist school of international relations theory, assessing particularly how strategic ideas in a given international system context are translated by the foreign policy executive into grand strategy. In doing so it covers the central contested ideas of American strategy after the Cold War: the level and form of American power; the nature of security threats; the role of idealism in foreign policy, in particular with regard to democracy promotion; the utility of international institutions; America’s appropriate place in the world; and the priority of domestic or international interests.

The book makes the case that the ideas of each strategic school-of-thought reflect both a distinctive theoretical understanding of international relations and a particular tradition in United States foreign policy. Furthermore, it makes the more general structural claim that under conditions of limited or contested threat such as the apparent unipolarity of the post-Cold War years, great power strategies are less determined by the imperatives of international structure, and the process of grand strategy formation reflects to an unusual degree the domestic concerns and balance of ideas of the foreign policy executive.

More Details..

Timor-Leste’s long journey to nationhood spans 450 years of colonial rule by Portugal, a short-lived independence in 1975, and a 24-year occupation by Indonesia. This book examines the history of nation-building and national identity in Timor-Leste, and the evolution of a collective identity through two consecutive colonial occupations, and into the post-independence era. It charts the evolution of the idea of an East Timorese nation: its origins, its sources, and its competitors in traditional understandings of political community, and the distinct colonial visions imposed by Portugal or Indonesia. The author analyses the evolution of ideas of collective identity under the long era of Portuguese colonial rule, and through the 24-year struggle for independence from Indonesia from 1975 to 1999. Reflecting the contested history of the territory, these include successive attempts to define its members as colonial subjects in a wider ‘pluri-racial’ Portuguese empire, as citizens in an ‘integrated’ province of the Republic of Indonesia – and, of course, as a nation that demanded its right to self-determination. Finally, the host of nation-building tensions and fault lines that emerged after the restoration of independence in 2002 are discussed.

Examining the history of debates and conflict over national identity, national history, cultural heritage, language policy, and relationships between distinct regions, generations, and language groups, this book will be of interest to academics in the fields of Asian studies, nationalism studies, and international and community development.

More Details..

Is the support for Europe as a global power an expression of an Europeanization of foreign policy? Or is this espousal simply instrumental to enhance national power through the medium of Europe?

Britain, France and Germany are medium sized powers, who hold global ambitions in foreign policy. Yet, after the end of the Cold War, the quest for a global role is increasingly pursued through the framework of the European Union.

The book is a comparative study of British, French and German foreign policy over the last two decades. Using the innovative role theory analysis, which builds on the theoretical literature of foreign policy analysis, national identity and sociological role theory, this book focuses on the convergence and divergence of their foreign policy. Empirically rich with a systematic, comparative analysis of speeches and interviews with policy-makers and politicians from Britain, France and Germany, this book offers a unique ‘insider view’, of the framing of national foreign policies, and also of the evolution of the European Union as a global security actor.

It will be of strong interest to students and scholars of Comparative Foreign Policy, International Relations and European Studies.
